Are the protests really "anti-capitalist"?

Recommended Posts

The news media dubs the City protests as anti-capitalist, reluctant to go into too much depth about the true concerns of many of the protesters, which seems more to do with corporatism and the mismanagement of the financial sector.

We could still have a capitalist economy with sound money and a reduction in corporate-state collusion. In fact, that is surely more in line with what traditional capitalism is about.

Once again, soundbites are distorting the true nature of these protests and shedding little light on the grey areas.

In a way, the banks and big corps that have been bailed out/subsidised in the past are anti-capitalist, since they're not prepared to stand on their own two feet in the marketplace and, more importantly, FAIL when they go bust. They run to the taxpayer with their begging bowls in a desperate attempt to socialise the risk they should be bearing. That's not capitalism.

The protests are surely anti greed and corruption? Not to mention anti-corporatist.

All sentiments I heartily agree with.

Of course the more simple among us will easily be misdirected by the MSM.

It's interesting and the fact that so far its peaceful is a good thing. I doubt the government are unduly concerned but with another camp in the making there is the possibility that it will continue to gather momentum which will be good i think. I haven't followed the politics of it all and i don't profess to understand it anyway but it would be nice to see some semblance of solidarity in this country and maybe force a decision, and the more people struggle to make a living the more likely that is. A simplistic view but its the only one i have.

In bold is precisely where your argument went foobar. The opposite is the case. In this country we have developed a political-financial corporatist block in the last 20-30 years. The financial sector is very enmeshed into government in many ways and that has been damaging for our economy and because of the massive volume of global trades passing through London, damaging to the world economy too.

If there should be protests anywhere it's in London
