A very simple question.

Should the people in the UK have the right to be paid their wages in cash.

For you see, they currently do not have that right.

True. There did used to be such a right, guarding against having to buy food/goods at overprice from one's employer. The odious practice is called 'truck, hence the Truck Acts (now repealed). http://uk.ask.com/web?q=%22Truck+Acts%22&sm=adv&advc=uk&dm=ctry&qsrc=66&o=312&l=dir

Paying in cash will result in increased costs to the employer the knock on effect of which is lower pay. Doesn't take much thinking to work out which payment method is best.

I wonder what the position would be if you closed your bank account - they after all can't decide not to pay you, and they can't sack you for not having a bank account...

It would all depend on your Contract of Employment's terms and conditions. Everyone's now state cheque or BACS as payment method.

If a condition of your employment is that you operate a bank account for your wages to be paid into then yes, they could fire you. Failing that maybe they would issue you a cheque.

I've had 2 employers in the past who prefered to pay in cash.

One was on a Friday one of the busier days so had the cash at the end of the day. The reason she gave is that she's not paying the banks fees or something along those lines.

Another moronic thread.

Paying in cash means a security headache. I recall those days when the security van would turn up with the wages. The factory was locked down until it left and people were restricted from given areas for the day.

It was a time when payroll trucks were being attacked and a couple of people lost their wages as they walked home pretty much every week.

Why would anyone be stupid enough to want their wages in cash?

So, what happens if you are walking home, with your wage, and you get mugged? Imagine losing a week's wage or more!
