Ex Prime Ministers cost us an arm and a leg

Not content with presiding over administrations that slowly led us to our current predicament, Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair are still bleeding us dry.

This story details how the three of them have claimed almost £2m in fees over the last five years, just for being ex Prime Ministers.

Nice work if you can get it.

Mmmm. £1.7m over 5 years. £340k a year, divided between about 30 million taxpayers in the UK - that's a little over one penny per year each.

I can cope with being 'bled dry' by a penny a year.

Indeed, this non-story is barely worth reading.

Regardless of your political persuasion, our ex-PMs have done a lot of good work in attracting trade to our country and maintaining the UK's position on the world stage. I don't begrudge them claiming a few quid in expenses here and there.

A few quid?

Libraries are being shut. School crossing patrols axed. Swimming pools and leisure services slashed, schools not being built etc etc yet apparently there is a few million quid down the back of the settee for these greedy, grasping ex-PMs to make appearences every so often.

"The system was set up by John Major in 1991, after one year in office, to reward former prime ministers for work including answering letters and attending public events"

Nothing like feathering your own nest eh?

I suppose the alternative that you favour was when Winston Churchill had to sell off much of his possessions because he was on the breadline. It really sent out a great advert for the UK.

Can you name any EU countries (or other Western nations like US, Cananda etc) that do not continue to look after their ex-Presidents and PMs when they retire?
