L00b
It could always be abolished and have the balancing amount applied to income tax rates...In that case, I can then predict a roaring trade for ferry operators and airlines instead
Cyclone
As foreigners come here to get cheap stuff... Does that happen to the US? I suppose it's a bit cheaper to pop across the channel than it is across the Atlantic.
Supertramp
So poor people pay more VAT. Richer people (ie on 30K a year or more) pay more in income tax. Even richer people spend more on road tax and fuel for their gas guzzlers. Or is it a case of "tough, they can afford it"? No rich people may pay more VAT, it's just less percentage of their income. However the article doesn't mention any of this.
Alien52
Fags and beer are not basics. They are to people who are addicted to them.I speak as an ex heavy smoker who has considered a packet of fags more important than a meal.
L00b
As foreigners come here to get cheap stuff...Nope. Doesn't quite work like that when you first have to fork out a ferry or Chunnel fare. Different kettle of fish when it's just a quick car trip away (I'm talking less than 40 miles or so, as catchment goes). Rather, in light of your earlier post (replacing VAT by income tax increase), as skilled workers jet off in a hurry to less socialist shores Britain can then revert to being that "nation of shopkeepers" again

Personally I wouldn't care if the amount I paid in direct tax increased whilst the amount I paid out in VAT decreased by a similar amount. Particularly if it meant that I could stop charging and paying VAT on all my invoices.
MrSmith
Of course not, that would be insane. You should be purchasing VAT free dog food for your whippet! He can, dog food for working dogs is vat free.

MrSmith
I know And for Yorkshiremen, fags and beer should be too Technically they already are I thought illegal drugs were the essential choice of the poor and they are vat free. Its time VAT was added to all illegal drugs as well.
