2 weeks in the USA!! I need help and suggestions!

Recommended Posts

I've never been to Boston Buck but next year i've got family coming over from Engald and they want to go to Boston. I've never even been on a train in the US, I fly all the time when i need to get from A to B, this way i get to spend more time at A before going back to B :)
When I lived on the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, and I had reason to go to Montreal on business, I had two choices. Drive 80 miles on terrible roads to Charlo airport, fly on the only daily flight and arrive in town too late for business that day, then stay the night in some hotel. If I took the train leaving New Richmond at 10 PM with a sleeper and club car priveleges, it arrived at 8:00 AM the following morning. It then returned at midnight the same day, giving me time for a couple of Martinis, a nice free breakfast, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Eastern Canada, arriving at 11 AM. All for less cost than the plane, hotel, and gasoline.:)

Amongst all those holes containing dead people, that would freak me out! Although I agree the desert around these cities is much more interesting!

Oh thank God I'm not a freak because I don't like bright lights and noise. :)

Does this not look like more fun than some 'ol casino?

I've been through Death Valley a few times but never stopped long enough. (for me) It was usually at night because of the heat and where we were going required us to keep going.

I enjoyed Vegas (been a few times and got married there...it's a long story), but Death valley, Yosemite etc are all better in my eyes.

This thread is now doing my head in. I was settled on Philly, Boston and New York for a 3 centre trip next month. Now I'm considering New Orleans, Seattle, Miami, Key west, Chicago as other options.

Arrrrggghhhh

Colorado is worth mentioning. Pikes Peak 14,000 feet above sea level and a view of five states from the top. They take you up on a train. The air is pretty thin up there and they dont advise anyone with cardiac problems to take the trip but the view is fantastic.

Colorado has some of the best scenery there is. A drive from Cortez to Durango will take you up mountains, through valleys with rivers and waterfalls along the way.

When in Durango take the ride on the vintage wood burning locomotive up to Silverton a historic old mining town in the mountains. Enjoy a couple of hours in the town eating at one of the small friendly restaurants and a few beers at one of the historic old saloons before boarding for the return trip to Durango. The trip up and back takes all day and the passenger cars have open sides for better viewing. Expect a little soot on faces and hands from the engine smoke. The missus and I looked like characters from the Black and White Minstrel show when we got back to Durango that evening

The Best Western in Durango is the best place to stay. Right in the middle of town, walking distance to everything with breakfast included in the room rate
