I like this piece, it's unapologetic and written very much in the same tone as Caitlin Moran.

That article is just imposing another orthodoxy. What about women who just prefer to remove all body hair because they think it looks better and not because they want to look like porn stars?

The California porn industry alone is vast, its successful and wealthy stars mostly female, and those female stars have hordes of adoring male fans - is that misogyny?

Yep. Very true. There's an awful lot of ignorance about porn which shows through in this thread.

The top earners in the porn industry are all women, by a rather humongous margin.

No no no! ;) They only think it looks better because theyve been pursuaded it does by filthy controlling men!

Interesting that you see it that way, I don't. If they wish to do that then of course, good for them. I seem to failing to convey my objections in this regard which are that is should be a concern when it is an expectation rather than a personal choice, one which is imposed by some cultural expectation, for the same reasons, I hate the burqa. Back to my point earlier on in this thread as one that the author of that article makes, The Joy of Sex illustrations are very different as to how they would appear today. Fashion? Trends? Whichever term you may wish to apply, where is the driving force here? I contend that it is porn. Are young women happy to do this? Do they feel unable to relax and enjoy sex because of certain physical and behavioural expectations? Are they putting themselves through painful and unnecessary procedures to enhance their sexual currency?

Women's bits come in all shapes and sizes. I find it disturbing that women are getting altered down there for anything other than medical reasons.

I do think young women of today feel like they have a lot to live up to. Not only physically aspiring to be something that isn't realistic but also performing sexually a certain way. I don't know whether men realize this when they are watching porn but the women are acting. The noises and movements aren't giving them pleasure they are just performing for the man. For impressionable inexperienced girls they don't know what is normal or isn't. For instance on average it takes a woman 20 minutes to reach climax and most women can't climax through penetration alone. In porn the women are climaxing through one flick of a mans tongue.

I hope young girls don't see porn and think I must do this or that. After all sex should be pleasurable for both parties. The female can hardly enjoy herself when thinking about the theatrical performance she needs to put on for the man.

I agree. What some are failing to grasp is that we now have a whole new generation who have learned about sex purely from porn.

I find it sad, depressing and ironic that whilst increasing numbers of women are having their facial lips plumped up others are having their vaginal ones trimmed. Are we heading towards a situation of fake looking and denuded clones?:(

Yes I think we are. Any kind of uniqueness is being lost to the idealism of what is perfect.

If they all look like a young Pam Anderson, I could live with that. In fact, a not-so-young Pam would be kind of ok.

As a young woman (22), I feel there are no expectations of me at all. But that's because I have my head screwed on, and I know that any sexual behaviour I partake in isn't due to feeling pressure from porn to behave that way, but from wanting to explore varying avenues of sexual expression and pleasure. I also personally don't feel my genitals have to look a certain way either, but again, that's because I can think for myself and don't feel a need to conform to some homogeneous ideal. However I don't doubt that there are many girls and young women who do succumb to pressure and think they'll not be considered desireable if they don't look or act a particular way, which is depressing.
