I think that we assume that all men do or should, however, I'm not so sure that young men who've acquired what they think to be a wealth of knowledge about sex from internet porn before they're sexually active will. It's impossible to really gauge without doing control studies. I read somewhere recently that someone had tried to undertake some research around this and compare the attitudes of young men who had watched a lot of porn to those who hadn't watched any, towards sex, women and female sexuality. They were unable to find a big enough sample of the latter category to make it meaningful. The feedback from many young women who feature in reports and studies about the effects of porn is that they feel pressured into looking and behaving in a certain way.

I have read about strippers getting more tips when they ovulate, it highlights how much pheromones play an important role in sexual attraction (as opposed to physical attraction). In the 80s there was craze for douching which was originated in the States. But then again, this is a nation which freaked at the sight of female nipple and where male circumcision is standard for 'hygiene' reasons. The differences in Italian porn is also very interesting. As a young woman (22), I feel there are no expectations of me at all. But that's because I have my head screwed on, and I know that any sexual behaviour I partake in isn't due to feeling pressure from porn to behave that way, but from wanting to explore varying avenues of sexual expression and pleasure. I also personally don't feel my genitals have to look a certain way either, but again, that's because I can think for myself and don't feel a need to conform to some homogeneous ideal. However I don't doubt that there are many girls and young women who do succumb to pressure and think they'll not be considered desireable if they don't look or act a particular way, which is depressing.

 

What a refreshing sane post- We sure like to pander to and mollecoddle the vacumous people these days.. but they cant be helped. If they didnt worry about their labia they would be told what else to worry about next.

Eh? I agree it is a very refreshing post if only all young women were as self-assured and confident as JenC (who also happens to be incredibly bright, articulate and insightful), but the whole point of my argument is that not all young people have these qualities, if they did then it wouldn't be an issue. I believe that it is the latest form of body dysmorphia and unless we challenge it, it will start to become as entrenched as anorexia and bulemia.
