Conrod
A couple of questions to legitimate honest taxi drivers out there: 1 - Does a minicab have to work to a set charge per mile, or can they demand whatever money they want? 2 - Can a cabbie use a black hackney carriage to answer a minicab booking, then turn his meter off to take the job? Minimo
I can answer the second question. I always ring for a minicab (same company) Sometimes a black cab turns up, but the meter is indeed turned off, and the fare is exactly the same as it is in a saloon car cab. Plain Talker
if you flag a hackney carriage (black cab-type taxi) then there is a meterage charge, (one of two tariffs depending on what time of day you catch the cab. Minicabs ("Private hire") have a mileage charge, which is set by the cab company, (and, I believe authorised by the council) which the drivers have to adhere to. So, two cars from the same firm can't charge different amounts for the same mileage. (EG, say, £5 for 1 &1/2 miles in one cab, and £6.50 for the same journey in another belonging to the same company)
