samshe
Mandarin would be next to useless (outside of the cultural improvement of learning a non-latin based language). Even should China's economy surpass all of the Western economies, there will be a lag in the period of transition in regards to language. Mandarin is almost unknown outside of China, the Chinese realise this and thus will continue to learn English for generations to come. Your question is rather vague. I would ask you want you want to learn a language for, is it to improve emplyment prospects? Do you want to travel? I would suggest however Spanish. I think that a person who speaks both English and Spanish has the best language tools available to them.

If someone is likely to do business in China, it's essential to learn Mandarin. You're right that the Chinese are pushing English but there's a lot more to a negotiation than what you're being told. You tend to find things out if you're able to communicate. Added - That goes for that pathetic 36 with fried rice post above. That poster will never taste the best of Chinese food and never see the best of Chinese culture with that daft attitude

md00071
In his latest book, Alan Sugar passionately urges parents to get their children to learn Chinese from an early age, as he predicts that it will become a basic requirement of business in the next 25 years. He notes, from experience, that the businessmen of the far east do not take kindly to being expected the conduct their business in english. It's a changing world. When the international busines language becomes Chineses with all their dialects, then we will have more English take aways. Long live curry whatever that crap is.
