Obsessed with medical labelling

Recommended Posts

NOTE: This is not an attack on GENUINE sufferers whom have been tested and diagnosed by proper medical authorities.

These days medical labels are thrown at everything as a way to try to justify certain behaviour types. Whilst I don't doubt that these conditions exist and that there are sufferers I cannot for one second entertain the idea that they're so widespread.

For example and these are just examples, I'm not picking on any set of individuals.

Dsylexia - How many of the many people who claim to be sufferers of the condition actually do and have been tested and confirmed. I suspect it's nowhere near the amount of people that claim to be. Why is it that someone who wasn't able to grasp reading and writing correctly or is just too lazy to be bothered MUST be dyslexic because that, when did the fact that some people just aren't intelligent enough become such an issue that excuses have to be made.

For the record I'm not saying that all dsylexics are stupid, I actually know a genuine sufferer who managed to become a lawyer. In fact she probably read/writes better than some people who don't suffer from it, myself included.

It's similar to ADHD etc. Why is it that a badly behaved child MUST have some chemical imbalance in their brain, why cannot it not just be a case of bad behaviour brought on by in-effective parenting and/or lack of discipline in that child's life?

I'm not saying that these conditions don't exist, far from it but I'm going to look back at the 6 years I was in Comprehensive school. In my first year, if someone was badly behaved they were put in detention/suspended/excluded. Fast-forward 6 years and students displaying that very same bad behaviour would be handled with kid-gloves and told it wasn't their fault, that it was some condition.

How many parents that don't discipline their kids and let them run practically ferral then defend their off-spring claiming that they have such conditions to hide the fact that they are ineffective as parents?

Again, parents of genuine sufferers, I'm not attacking you, I'm sure you do the best that you can do but surely it must grind you that all the recognition of all hard work you put in is usurped by someone who can't be bothered.

Of course there are probably bits of this that if I spent enough time I could re-word to come across more sympathetically, but then that's half the point, because it seems in today's society we're not allowed to call someone stupid, lazy or badly behaved now are we?

What a load of ignorant nonsense.

It's just not true to say 'Why is it that someone who wasn't able to grasp reading and writing correctly or is just too lazy to be bothered MUST be dyslexic'.

In fact the opposite it true.

It can take years for children to be properly diagnosed and its certainly not done on a whim.

My son went through school being labelled as lazy and uncooperative etc. At 16 a tutor at Sheffield college finally arranged for a dyslexia assessment and....just as I had been saying for 10 years...he is dyslexic. My grandaughter has been diagnosed at age 9 so she is getting the specialist teaching that my son never got and as a result is making progress and doing well at school.

My son was let down by schools who couldn't be bothered to look at what was really going on with him because then they would have had to provide him with appropriate help and support which costs money.

Why did you not get an assesment done yourself..not knocking you,it's a genuine question..

A fair question.,,,because I wasn't aware at the time that it was possible to have a dyslexia assessment done privately and every so called 'expert' within the school system told me he was not dyslexic for one reason or another. I did however bring him up to believe in himself and to feel he could do anything he set his mind to. He is now a young man with a good career and I am proud of him.

I thought I made it pretty clear in my OP, I'm not having a go at genuine cases but even yourself must admit that there are people out there that claim they have these conditions, never been/never intend to be tested and use it purely as an excuse.

I wish your son and your daughter every best wish and hope they succeed in their endeavours.
