Enid Brookes, nee Shipley, died 1972 - anyone know of her?

This is a big longshot, I know, but it amazes me what people remember on this forum, so thought I'd have a go, even though I don't know a lot of specifics.

Does anyone know anything about a Mrs Enid Brookes, nee Shipley, born 1901 registered in Ecclesall Bierlow and died, I think, 1972 when, as far as I'm aware she was again living in Sheffield, though she had spent her married life married to a teacher in Nottingham and then been widowed in 1944.

If this rings any bells for anyone, I'd be really interested to hear from them.

thank you.

Hi landgirl - I didn't know Enid but I can give a little information from public records. The deaths index confirms Enid's date of birth as 27 May 1901, and she died in Sheffield in the first quarter of 1972. The 1911 census shows Enid, aged 10, with her parents George and Christiana Shipley and two younger siblings at 112 Ranby Road, Greystones. She married Charles Basil Brookes, 20 years her senior, in Sheffield in 1925, and they evidently had a daughter, Joan K.M. Brookes. Charles died aged 64 in Nottingham in 1944.

hi Hillsbro - thank you so much for that. I was beginning to think I was barking up the wrong tree with Enid and that she wasn't, after all, married to my 1st cousin twice removed (!) Charles Basil Brookes, but your details confirm that this is the right information and the detail is extremely useful.

I'm new to this game and other than a subscription to Ancestry website, I'm a newbie on where to look - may I ask where you got that information so quickly?

Many thanks, again, for bothering to reply. It's really helpful for what I'm doing.

regards Landgirl

Hi landgirl - I'm only too happy to help with this sort of research, which I quite enjoy doing. Like you I subscribe to http://www.ancestry.co.uk, and also http://www.findmypast.co.uk, both of which which provide indexed access to birth, marriage and death records, also census returns up to 1911, and they provide many other sources of information. Much of the indexed BMD data is also available free of charge via http://www.freebmd.org.uk .I also have the 2003 and 2004 census returns on CDs, and so can sometimes find long-lost relatives.

In case it is of interest, it seems that Joan K.M. Brookes married William Wells in Sheffield in 1952, and I might (possibly) have found her in the 2004 census, not far from where her parents lived. PM me if you'd like details..:)
