Tony
They did sell off or shut the main heavy employment industry's coal steel railways water electricity gas telephones post on and on all these company's employed people on mass, not anymore they mite have been unprofitable but they gave people gainful employment better than putting people on the dole, you need to look at the history of the British motor industry and you will see most of the death nails were driven into the industry under the tory governments of the past Rover was already a lost cause when Labour came to power in 97 due to 20 years of tory abuse, the torys let Honda and Toyota set up here as they paid massive back handers to the torys the same British workers are putting them cars together, our workers can out work any Japanese workers, this country was sold down the line by Thatcher and her government. Your contribution is an interesting insight to yourself, but it is rather moot since by your own admission you don't understand the direct connection between profit and employment. Here's an explanation in a nutshell; Without profit there is no employment.
Darth Vader
Erm.... the 2008 bank bailouts. Wasn't that using taxpayers money to subsidise business? Who was in charge then? Oh wait, it was the NuTories. Sorry, my mistake. No need to apologise, you're absolutely correct - Right shower! - but still they proved they are better at dealing with economic crises than this lot are. Here's an explanation in a nutshell; Without profit there is no employment. And with out employment there is no profit as there is no one to buy the goods, its a chicken and egg situation better to subsidies the the industrial base of the country than have millions of unemployed people doing nothing, this country is in the same state now as it was under the last tory government and it will only get worse especially for the young people in this country, god help us if they manage to fiddle there way back into power again the next time round. What about black Wednesday 16th September 1992 that cost the tax payers 3.3 billion.
0742Sheff
I have been told today that this isn't even a new scheme. It is the same thing that has been running under a different name for a while now. The government have just renamed it and relaunched it to make it look like they are doing something. Apparently. Albet
Will Cameron and Clegg pay for this out of their own very substantial fortunes that mummy and daddy gave them or will they take the money from us very hard pressed taxpayers as usual? Shogun
The bottom line is there is no jobs for young people there is no industry in this country any more to talk about the young people will be used as cheap labour and threatened with dole money being taken away from them if they don't take one of these placements,if the government go through with this company's like McDonalds and Kfc should not be able to take people on this scheme they can give a dead end job to any one, the company's that enter into this scheme should have the vacancies there and give some sort of training that can give them some positive work experience they can take forwards, when I was a lad there were the ones that were smart and studied for professional jobs, and there was the ordinary kids that would go into the factory's and big national industry's not any more it was all sold off by Thatchers government. Tony
Except that the UK has the 7th largest manufacturing output in the world, though interestingly it was 6th prior to 1997, where it had been since the 50's from memory. Pesky facts.

Pesky facts. high output but the majority is automated so there are few manufacturing jobs.
