Affordable housing starts in the six months to September 2011 have fallen by 97 per cent when compared to the same period last year, according to the latest government figures.

Statistics published on the Homes and Communities Agency website today show there were just 454 affordable housing starts on site in England between 1 April 2011 and 30 September 2011. In the same period in 2010, there were 13,402 starts.

Of the 454 homes, 259 were for social rent and 195 for low cost homeownership.

Completions also suffered a fall, with 12,803 in 2011, but 19,533 in 2010, a drop of 34 per cent.

Shocking!

Affordble housing is a great idea in theory, but a daft idea in practice.

Which developers wants to spend millions of pounds building houses for unemployed families with 7 kids and 21 grandkids to smash up vulnerable families seeking accomodation, when they can sell the same house to a responsible, employed person instead?

Which homeowner wants to risk spending hundreds of thousands of pounds acquiring a mortage for such a property, only to end up living next door to unemployed families with 7 kids and 21 grandkids to smash up vulnerable families seeking accomodation, when they can live next door to a responsible family instead?
