sedith
Friend of mine just rang, he's lost his roof due to a freak hurricane in Goole at about 4pm today. It ripped through the road and took the roof of several houses and lifted a shed off its base and dumped it in the road! I didn't realise it was that windy?? They are quite important in keeping the rain out.

There was no hurricane today; there has not been a hurricane in Britain for at least ten million years. It's physically impossible for any hurricane ever to survive and reach these latitudes. Ah .. that could be true, although I'd expect a tornado to do more damage. I did rather casually assume that it was just another idiot referring to "a hurricane" when he meant a gale, or a storm. some guy
Don't think it could have been a hurricane as they're more tropical. Tornado possibly.

I did rather casually assume that it was just another idiot referring to "a hurricane" when he meant a gale, or a storm. Hurricane force winds (rather than a "hurricane" as in a tropical cyclone) are just a measure of wind speed (as are gales and storms) on the Beaufort Scale - although exceedingly rare in this country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale A tornado (or twister) would, as you say, cause even more damage - but again pretty rare over here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado
