Unclean animals in religion

Recommended Posts

I like Christopher Hitchen's Chapter - A Short Digression on the Pig (Why Heaven Hates Ham)

I tried watching that, but decided I could not deal with nine and a half minutes of the epilepsy-inducing flashing text, after my migraine headache started about a minute into watching the video.

It's the same as the Bible saying you can't eat shellfish. It's probably because a lot of people that did got very ill or died. I think the Bible also says you can't eat Camel?!

No, it says that Jews cannot.

The basic requirements for quadrupeds to be capable of human consumption by Jews are:

a. chewing the cud; and

b. wholly-cloven hooves.

Camels/rabbits/hares qualify on only a but not b.

Pigs qualify on only b but not a.

Why do some religions consider pigs unclean? I for one have never seen a cow wipe its bottom. I don't reckon that chickens spend a great deal of toilet paper either.

'Unclean' is a misnomer, in this context.

The proscribed animals are classed as 'impure' in a Jewish context only; animals' cleanliness is not a factor.
