grinder
Over the last 30 odd years I've heard a lot about pit closures and how it destroyed whole communities and a way of life. The railways was another and the steel works, but nobody seems to have noticed the demise of another great self contained community, the big engineering firms. For thousands of Sheffield folk working in an Engineering factory wasn't just the way they earned a crust, they were communities with sports clubs, fishing clubs football teams just like the mines. Now most of the big Engineering firms and their communities have slid silently into history, But there must still be a lot of memories out there, a lot of funny stories ........ So what's your favorite one ?
Billy Casper
My Dad worked for an engineering firm for most of his life, like you say, they had their own football team, snooker team, etc. He retired in 2003, unfortunately the firm closed in 2005. He worked at Brass Founders on Scotland Street.

xenia
Hey, you'll soon have all the out of town Tories on in a minute telling us how much more engineering, Sheffield does than now than 30 years ago!!! Yes and this one who will tell you how the unions destroyed the engineering industry by ceaselessly demanding more money, thereby making products too expensive and forcing production abroad.
