If you decided to have a retail-free Christmas, or at least to opt out of the whole 'avarice' based fiasco we no longer associate with anything remotely religious (pagan OR Christian), what are the important bits you'd keep in, or what would you do instead? The idea of meeting up with your loved ones in the shortest/darkest days of the year and having a party to cheer everyone up is the fundamental thing that's attractive about a mid winter feast. That always has and always will be the case regardless of past, present or future religious or non-religious affiliations. So the bits to keep are visiting family and friends, and the food and drink.
