Arthur Scargill makes me proud to be English!

Recommended Posts

Yes - he was arrested - a concept which current union leaders some 40 office blocks away from where the action is need not fear.

Its a class thing from a bygone age where leaders lead their troops into battle but that got lost somewhere down the line and should have been re instated for the Iraq invasion as our brave lads were lead in by Blair the brave. (or not so as it turns out)

Scargill indeed led from the front. All todays leaders are "Follow me men, I am right behind you" types.

Having been invlolved in the strikes of '74, '76 and '84, i found that the only people that benefitted was the union officials. They "appeared" to be no more financially worse off than when they was at work, many, in fact, buying new cars etc shortly after the strikes ended. This, while the workforce struggled to get back on their feet having lost many weeks wages.

Scargill and "his cronies" ought to rot in hell for the damage they caused to the general workforce.

As far as being a failing industry, at the time, English coal was one of the cheapest to produce in the world, it was mainly foreign country subsidies that made it cheaper to import, and we are now paying dearly for the decisions made at that time

I agree with you Sir.

Arthur Scargill and his cronies were nothing more than rich (very) socialists.

Very much like Derek Hatton (Liverpool) and Ben Elton (He of the big gob)

Margaret Thatcher makes me proud to be English. She put unions in their place. It is thanks to her that people like me can choose to join a union rather than being forced to join as part of the conditions of being offered the job. She deserves every honour she receives including a state funeral when she eventually goes. Remember the public never voted her out so she must have done something right.

I think you will find she retained powere due to the divided opposition,a direct consequence of the SDP,which has now withered due to its lack of a coherent set of policies and an absence of principles.

Indeed.

It's only in bitter parts of the North where people who used to work in dying heavy industries (which would have gone under soon enough anyway) blame her for their demise and vent their misguided hatred.

Most of the UK's population is in the South, and she remains very popular there.

Our best post-war PM - by a long way.

Strange that like you I bunch Hatton, Scargill and Elton in the same category. Self seeking gangsters that would sell their mothers for their own advantage.

I was a member of the NUM throughout the strike and picketed in solidarity with my workmates. We were conned by Scargill. Whilst we were on the picket line senior members of the NUM were on holiday in Tenerife. They burned down the NUM office at Manvers to destroy the books containg the payments made to flying pickets. (hope you are reading this Frankie). Scargill bought a house in its own grounds just north of J38 of the M1. I lost my house.

Scargill sent men to Libya to get money from gaddafi and tried to get money from the Russians, even they turned him down.

He was a crook.

I did nt realise that dyeing took place in the North_ Iassumed it would be based round the textiles of Notts and Leics.

She is not very popular in London,Brighton and Portsmouth, the Brstolians hate her for closing Frys and Wills and reading hate her for widening the Thames corridor by putting extra lanes on the M4.That leaves Guilford and Southampton and the villages.
