Any local authority in England wanting to raise council tax by more than 3.5% next year must consult the public in a referendum, the government has said.

Under plans unveiled by Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles, councils losing a referendum would have to revert to a lower increase in bills.

How would you vote?

They should get rid of council tax and charge a tax based upon a property's value.

People will be happy with their negative equity then!

Is that because people with more expensive homes use more of the council’s services or because your home is not worth much and you want to pay less.

Obviously most people would vote no but the councils will get round this.

They'll just increase council tax by 3.499% every year regardless of whether it's necessary or not.

That would be excellent if inflation was running at less than 3.5%.

Mr Pickles might be better getting his cabinet buddies to work on that one first.
