andyofborg
This is what perplexes me. Why is the euro-plus locking in a particular economic approach. Fiscal stimulus done properly in a recession can be a good thing. I'm talking here about bang for the buck infrastructure projects where for every pound spent a pound is added to GDP and a lasting economic legacy remains in terms of upgraded infrastructure. There is no reason not to do that kind of thing - some bloke from Fitch said on the TV recently that the markets would actually support that kind of thing. The anti-Keynesian stance locked into legal agreements is insanity IMO. There will be times when it is genuinely needed but legally can't be used. indeed i think they are trying to prove willingness to control government borrowing to try and convince the markets to lend at sane rates. also, just as in the uk where the poorer regions are subsidised by the rich then the poorer eurozone countries are going to need financial support from the richer ones ie france and germany. this probably won't sit well with the french and german taxpayers so by maintaining strict control of deficits it places some limits on how much they will be expected to stump up. Or is it just a set piece? His party may well pay the price Malky, but slippery Nick will have feathered his own nest long before that happens. How ironic would it be if Cameron put him up for a job in Europe. Stoatwobbler
I would imagine you are quite correct. What are the options for Clegg and the other LDs? 1 To carry on and stay in power for the next 3 years with a good number of MPs in Westminster and a few in the Cabinet. ...... I can't think of any more but only option 1 gives them any hope of influence and any guarantee of remaining as an MP. First of all, shouldn't the purpose of a political party be something higher then grabbing power at any cost. Secondly, have you considered that option #1 is just delaying the inevitable?
