Gingrich defends assertion that Palestinians are an ‘invented’ people

Recommended Posts

I can understand the invented entity being a bit upset. Imagine your whole identity being a fake? imagine having no culture, no history etc.

For some it wouldn't be a problem, but a lot of people over a couple of generations have invested a lot of time and money into creating the 'palestinian' story - one can understand their anger at it being exposed so publicly.

Hey, just like the USA.

Fair enough. Most USA culture was imported from England (Pilgrim Fathers), Holland, and Spain.

Plus the Red Indians native there.

Fair enough but also most of the culture that has developed since came from the frontier settler experience. The kind of experience that developed the strong feeling of independence and self reliance, the spirit of entrepreneurship and the willingness to take chances which marks the Amercan character as different from his/her European forebears.

Much could be said as well for Canadians and Australians

No culture? No history? Silly comment. Most present day culture in the UK has been imported from America. Everything from jeans and Halloween to McDonalds :hihi:

It was meant tongue in cheek - unlike the crassness of Newt's comments.

However, much of American culture was brought in by the immigrants from Europe and elsewhere. Try pop music, with it's origins in African slave culture, or cowboy culture with it's Spanish roots, or Halloween, which you mention, that has its origins in paganism, which goes way back to early European cultures (if not even further back).

So, the best you can say is that the Amercians are good at fixing on something that someone else came up with, and giving it their own spin.

No one else came up with the passenger lift which enabled cities to build skyscrapers, the electric light bulb and of course Microsoft and air conditioners to name but a few

Palestinians are the Philistines in the Bible. Presumably they are in the Jewish religious texts too. It's bizarre to say they are a modern invented people.

Sorry, you're wrong. The Philistines are not related to Palestinians.

The name confuses many people, but there is no relation. The Romans tried to erase Jewish claims to the land by naming it after the Philistines (who were Israel's enemies at the time)

There are plenty of American inventions you could have used there but the electric light bulb (British) is not one of them.
