Gingrich defends assertion that Palestinians are an ‘invented’ people

Recommended Posts

Could somebody take the time to explain why the Palestinians are an invented people?

I don't get it.

I think technically everyone born in Israel and Jordon can be defined as a Palestinian, because Palestine was both countries, the British divided Palestine in 1923 and gave three quarter to the Arab Palestinians and they became Jordanians, and the other quarter was given as the home land of the Palestinian Jews who became Israelis. The Arabs were unhappy with the arrangement and the ones living in Israel call themselves Palestinians and claim it as their land, where as the Arabs born in Jordan call themselves Jordanians. Now the (Palestinians?) want Israel dividing to give them an homeland despite the fact they were given an homeland in 1923.

Well, at least you are suggesting that Palestinian national consciousness goes back further than 1964.

I don't think you understand. The Romans banned the Jews and named their territory of Israel/Judea as 'palestine'.

There was never a country called 'palestine' and there were never 'palestinians'. The people living there at that time were Jews, Romans and some descendants of the Pagans.

Palestiniasn as a people were invented in 1964 as a political weapon to use against Israel.

If the Romans banned the Jews how did the Jews survive?Do you mean the Romans forced the Jews into exile?I think you are angry as your sentences are terse and lack coherence.

They didn't have a Palestinian national consciousness, in 1923 the British referred to everyone in that region as Palestinian Arabs or Palestinian Jews but they didn't. They didn’t consider themselves to be Palestinians untill it suited their agenda.

Banned the Jews from Jerusalem apart from on one day per year.

You can't invent people out of thin air. The 'palestinians' came into being as a people in 1964.

Jerusalem is the most excavated place on earth. Yet still after all this time no one can find any palestinian artefacts. Nothing. Not a mug, a coin, a plate - zero.

The whole land is saturated with Jewish artefacts. There is Arab history, but nothing for 'palestinians' because they didn't come into being until 1964 when the Arabs who lost the war were re-branded as palestinians.

Many Jews continued to live in the region but most where exiled and moved all over Europe. I think the Greeks were the first people to kick the Jews out of Judea and Israel and took many back to Greece as slaves but the Jews always managed to return to their homeland.

What was the agenda, say immediately after 1923. Why did national consciousness start to develop?

A clue for you - this is around the same time that really concerted efforts were made to construct a Jewish-Israeli national consciousness with the aim to 'build up gradually a nationality, and so make Palestine as Jewish as America is American or England English'

The quote is from Weissman at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919.

If Palestinian consciousness arose in response to this why does that make it any less valid?

Genetic studies have shown that modern Palestinian arabs have strong genetic ties with Jews and Christians who lived in Palestine before the Islamic conquest in the 700s.

Many of the Jews never left at all, They became Muslim. Converted.

Oh the irony of it all.

They don't want to share the land with Jews;

Because the Palestinian Arabs had already been given three quarter of Palestine the Palestinian Jews only got a quarter and now the Palestinian Arabs want some of that as well.

Genetic studies also show that most modern Jews also have strong genetic ties with Jews and Christians who lived in Palestine before the Islamic conquest in the 700s.

That’s always been a problem with religion it divides people with common ancestry.
