Military to aid with Olympic security in 2012

Recommended Posts

My understanding is that all existing commitments will be met, should something "crop up" that this deployment leaves us unable to deal with the United States have committed to fill the gap in re the security we are putting in place.

Interesting. That presupposes that whatever potential arena we could be involved in the US could slip seamlessly into our place instead. Would they help us in the Falklands?

Cuts are relative; we still have the fourth or fifth largest military power on the globe, despite being not all that big a country.

We got a lot of technology but not that much manpower.

Unless the TA will be used. Which would kind of make a heck of a lot of sense.

I can see the need for sniffer dogs and so on but why do they need helicopter carrying landing craft?

There will be sniffer dogs and bomb disposal units. Helicopters and landing crafts are very effective of getting numbers of personnel to a location very quickly, avoiding heavy London traffic. Given the location of the venue, the area has a maze of rivers/canals so ideal for boats.
