Nagel
Going through some old documents I realised that I had a different NI number in the past, twenty years ago. It's only different in the final digit. I thought a NI number was assigned for life so how is it possible that I have had two?
Jeffrey Shaw
No, it is fixed for life. Maybe someone earlier made a transcription error.
Nagel
I wonder what kind of can of worms it will open up when I inform National Insurance about this? On the plus side though I could open a second ISA account Just kidding, I know it would be illegal.
muddycoffee
you need to sort it out now or when you come to drawing your pension you may be out of pocket because 20 years of your employment history (and counting) may be missing.

You may well receive a double pension, especially if you can find a different address for one of the numbers.many peoiple have a second number (by mistake) but you are the first to draw attention to it-silly boy,Pikey! I may receive a double pension, or I may receive half a pension. The double pension would be illegal. What would you do? I know what I will do which is to contact NI to sort it out.
