Can your National Insurance number change?

Going through some old documents I realised that I had a different NI number in the past, twenty years ago. It's only different in the final digit.

I thought a NI number was assigned for life so how is it possible that I have had two?

I wonder what kind of can of worms it will open up when I inform National Insurance about this?

On the plus side though I could open a second ISA account

Just kidding, I know it would be illegal.

You may well receive a double pension, especially if you can find a different address for one of the numbers.many peoiple have a second number (by mistake) but you are the first to draw attention to it-silly boy,Pikey!

I may receive a double pension, or I may receive half a pension. The double pension would be illegal.

What would you do?

I know what I will do which is to contact NI to sort it out.
