big_malc
Hi guys. I've signed up to do the Manchester Marathon in April - I've done a bit of running before in the form of 10k races but fancied throwing myself in at the deep end. I'm prepared for the cold weather etc, but I could do with a few suggestions for routes between 10-20 miles. I don't mind admitting that I pick up niggles quite easily so I don't get on well with the hills of Sheffield. I also realise that I'm never going to find a flat route, but if anyone has any suggestions at all that could keep the hills to a minimum that would be great. I live in the S6 area. Cheers
NickDuggan
Try coming down to Don Valley on Tuesdays or Thursdays 6pm ready to run and pick up some ideas and routes from other people in Sheffield Running Club
Runningman
In my marathon training days I used the Don Valley a lot i.e. Wicker to Rotherham and back by the various routes. Coming out of town via the Moor, London Road, Abbeydale Road, Abbeydale Road South to Beauchief lights, then along Abbey Lane to Woodseats and back down Chesterfield Road, Queens Road to the city is another alternative. Bit more scenic is out of town on the 5 weirs walk to Meadowhall, down the canal to Aldwarke the other side of Rotherham and return by same route. Best of luck !! aelfheah
I used to regularly run 5m up and down hills locally years ago, but am quite unfit now, do you have any good training advice for restarting to run again? I even need to buy some new training shoes first. Obviously I'll take it easy and run/walk (all I can do now!), but is there any experienced advice that could help me further? Thanks
icehockeyjoe
Nice and pretty flat ten miler: starting in hillsborough, run out to dam flask, do one lap and back to hillsborough. To extend it just do more laps of dam flask (one lap about 3.2 miles). Most other 10 plus miles from s6 involve hills although could run from s6 to town, then don valley and back- not the most picturesque run! If you can get out to ladybower/fairholmes visitor centre you have good options for 5.5/ 10.5/ 16 mile runs
Tobymut
I find to mix it up and not have the same start and end point every run to drive out somewhere and run, there are some lovely runs in the peaks. I did some simulated altitude training for mine too which I'd highly recommend! Just based at greens.
big_malc
Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking of working my way up to going along Wordsworth Avenue, into Ecclesfield, along Wooley Wood bottom to Meadowhall then to town and back up to Wadsley Bridge. Apart from the end, that sounds reasonably flat? Haven't worked out the distance yet though..!
Kat326
If you are around the Hillsborough area run out Middlewood Road through Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and to Deepcar - footpath all the way and once you get through Oughtibridge village no more roads to cross bar the entrance to British Tissues. I too am contemplating Manchester............
scottf
If your not sure of the distance you can alway use this website below, I found it a real help http://gb.mapometer.com/ Or if you have an iPhone or iPod touch then download an app called runkeeper, it tracks where you run and gives you split times, it's a great app.

Cheers A little off-topic, (but still relevant!) we run a unique Runners', Climbers' and Cyclists' Yoga class on Thursdays at our Centre. A lot of the class members find that it not only helps them to relax after a hard training session, but it also leads to improvement in their running performance.
