Pubs charging for admittance on NYE

Recommended Posts

This is one reason why i stopped going out on NYE, as bars/pubs I used to go in all year round without an entrance fee were charging stupid amounts just to get in (this wasn't in Sheffield as I have only lived here for a year)

Some of the bars had a bucket with a 'place a donation of £1/£2 which was as someone else mentioned money for the staff/security etc as a bonus/tip so i didn't mind doing that (although didnt always throw in the suggested amount)

I much prefer to go to house parties for NY now, better than paying into a bar etc and then being crammed and queuing for ages to get a drink

Walkabout on West St are charging a £3 admission fee tonight also. Most weekends we go in there, but not tonight. It's the principal. Pure greed, nothing else.

We'll probably spend most of the evening in the Nelson or the Sportsman. Polite barstaff and no problem getting served in there!

My guess is that no matter how many people find it unacceptable, his pub will still be full to bursting and he'll still be unable to cope with demand.

Pubs will be full of once a year drinkers that cant hold their drink while the landlord will have alienated his regular clientele …….. Great move  …….. that’s the reason only city centre bars could get away with it, local bars stopped doing it after they realised the “Millennium” was a one off as far as charging people to drink in their local goes.

I would object on principle to paying to go into a pub on NYE that I could go into for free every other day of the year, and I'd tell the landlord that too.

It's only by knowing quite how many people find it unacceptable (and that this is turning away otherwise well-paying customers) that things will change.

Me too Meds.. And that's why I never go out NYE, not even to SF unofficial meets.

i weny to g casino last year and it was stupid the amount of ppl in there . you couldnt get served at the bar . i complained to the manager why he had not made it ticket only ,he said he was not allowed as it was a public venue.so surely this counts to pubs as well i say they can shove their tickets where the sun dont shine.i shall being staying at home with friends and family.and not giving in to those greedy landlords.:hihi:

Ask them. I too disagree with it and that's why I don't go to them if they charge. It seems odd to ask what are essentially the entertainment to pay for the privilege of having fun.

Don't be ridiculous.

Fun should be paid for.

(As opposed to a business that makes money from selling you stuff - i.e. a pub - rather than charging you for the privelege of selling you stuff.

Which is why I also won't go into a pub selling tickets for entry on NYE, and I'll not patronise them in future either, if I find out about it.)

Has anyone such a list of Sheffield establishments?

Time to "name and shame", people

One of our local pubs is charging £10 per adult and £5 per child. It is a local pub for local people.

If it's shared round the staff as a bonus, then i don't have a problem with it.It's not only pubs exploiting the general public,Hotels are at it too.Up in Edinbrough, they are charging 300+ quid per night, instead of the usual 100+ per night.

Some of you need to grow up. What's wrong with you people.

Exploitation my a**e. Its supply and demand. Its businesss. They are not your friends. They are there to make money. No-one is being exploited as you have a choice. Go out or stay in.

Edinburgh is hugely popular at new year. Hotel rooms and restaurant bookings sell out months in advance. That's why they can charge. Just the same at Festival time or tourist season.

London is exactly the same. Hotels and nightclubs are exactly the same.

Rule 1 of running a business. When demand is high charge more. When demand drops off offer a discount or other incentive.

The reason most people become a regular of a certain pub or pubs is simply because its LOCAL. Local to you, your family or local to where you live. If you move you find another one. Very little to do with the pub itself. All this "never going to go there again" is just pathetic. Its only one night of the year.

In my experience most NYE pubs with charges do provide some form of entertainment, buffet, dinner or other extras. That has to be paid for and that's why they charge.

Pubs only hold a certain amount of people. Ticketing with the appropraite price ensures the pub has the right number in and usually the right kind of people. The wanderers or once a year crowd find they cant get in as they have sold out. That stops the overcrowding and huge queues at the bar people seem to complain about when its a busy occasion.

No it doesn't.

It certainly doesn't stop the huge queues at the Bar, you get those on an average Saturday night, never mind if NYE falls on a Saturday.

I don't go out on Christmas or New Years Eve, there's no point. You have to wait 10 deep at the bar, 30 minutes for a drink, getting elbowed all over the place, stepping around vomit, queueing for the bogs and on top of all that, they want you to pay to get it ...Sod that!
