Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs 4 Swindon Wildcats 2

A hard earned but well fought 4 point weekend for the Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs in their double-header against Swindon Wildcats in a penalty shoot out win on Saturday and a more decisive 4-2 win on Sunday.

It was a long drive home after a bruising game on Saturday before another contest between the two teams at iceSheffield on Sunday. This was Steeldogs first game back home after 5 road games and when they were missing Andre Payette and Lloyd Gibson from the game. Nicky Watt was missing from Swindon's line-up after taking a slapshot on his leg and being stretchered off from Saturday's game, fortunately an x-ray confirmed it was not broken.

A good-sized home crowd on was introduced to two new players on the roster, Raivis Kurnigins and Shaun Wild, as well as the newly signed Steeldogs Academy Prospects.

There were some groups and other fans new to Steeldogs hockey at the game and they were entertained by some fast hockey, six goals and a few fights.

Feisty play commenced with some roughing behind the net as goalie, Dean Skinns, got embroiled with incoming Craig Elliot and Steve Duncombe was also binned for roughing with Sam Bullas.

Steeldogs took the lead at 10.41 with a powerplay goal by Ashley Calvert, assisted by Stuart Brittle and Ben Morgan. Janis Ozolins' goal at 18.30 doubled the score for a 2-0 at the end of a fast 1st period.

The second period saw plenty of goal action as Aaron Nell halved the lead with a short-handed goal at 21:08, to which Steeldogs quickly replied seconds later via Chris Sykes, assisted by Greg Wood and Ozolins, to go 3-1 up. A chase down the ice by Cesky was thwarted as he was closing in on net but was handed a penalty shot instead, from which he scored to make it 3-2 to re-dress his miss the night before.

Steeldogs rounded off the scoring for the game on the powerplay at 32:02 as Swindon sat out a 'too many men' minor, as Andrew Hirst scored a powerplay goal (assisted by Wood and Morgan). A short delay to the game came when Swindon's only goalie was taken into the goal post by his own defender two minutes from the end of the 2nd period, but recovered to finish the game.

The third period saw a spate of roughing calls as Lewis Bell and Craig Elliott had fights with Bullas and Taylor respectively. A very chippy third period with no further scoring to add to the 4-2 scoreline and Ben Morgan was awarded the MOM beers for his hard work.

Andre was really pleased with the effort the whole team had put in over a tough weekend and the four points capped it off well.

With Milton Keynes faltering on Saturday and not playing Sunday, Sheffield Steeldogs were elevated to 4th in the league but with only 2 points separating the teams 2nd to 5th in the league.

Some entertaining hockey for the fans to enjoy back at iceSheffield then, and with the promise of an even more explosive encounter at home next Saturday (7.30pm) as Steeldogs renew their recent rough acquaintance with Peterborough Phantoms - a game not to be missed!

Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs v Peterborough Phantoms

Saturday 4th February, 7.30pm iceSheffield

Time to rumble.....the Phantoms are coming to town!

Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs have just the one home match this weekend, but it is likely to be a rough welcome for the visiting Peterborough Phantoms after the two teams previous encounter down in Peterborough.

Andre Payette was not happy with the manner of the treatment his team received in that bruising loss and this return game will see Steeldogs intent on taking a home win, in what will be a feisty game this weekend at iceSheffield.

Andre said prior to Saturday's game “ We went into Peterborough and were out-muscled and out-worked for the first time this year and this will not happen again. My boys will be playing old time hockey and, right from the first whistle, I anticipate hard-hitting action-packed hockey with fights, goals and a home victory.

WE HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE.

This season could not be more of a contrast from this time last season for Payette's Steeldogs, when they were languishing near the bottom of the table.

They are currently in 4th place with a Cup Semi-final v Milton Keynes next Wednesday (home-leg, 7.30pm), and continue to challenge the top higher-spending teams, while playing some very entertaining hockey.

Andre hopes our fans will turn up in numbers to support his players on Saturday when fur will be flying. Let's get ready to rumble!

Tickets available on the door:

Adult £9.00, *Concession £6.50, *Child £3.50 (U8's Free) Family £20.00.

Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs take on Milton Keynes Lightning in a huge Cup Semi-Final game on Wednesday, 7.30pm at iceSheffield.

This will be a great battle between two of this season's well-matched teams as they strive to pick up the first two points of this two-legged Semi-Final Cup tie, with the end prospect of reaching the Final and some silverware.

Andre said “ We are really looking forward to our first Cup semi-final. All the guys are excited as this is a great chance for them to play for a trophy and that is why they play the game.

While MK is a seasoned campaigner and winner at the top level, for Steeldogs to reach this Cup semi is a huge achievement in only its second season and a complete turn-around in their League positioning from 12 months ago.

Milton Keynes are a top flight team and tough to play against with their strong defensive unit and quality netminding. Steeldogs however can match them in defence, along with the League's current top goalie, Ben Bowns, protecting Sheffield's net.

So it will be a contest of the forwards pressuring the defence and finding the back of the oppositions' net. Games between these two teams have been relatively tight contests of good hockey but with Sheffield edging the series this year.

However, Andre Payette will not allow his team to be complacent and will be firing them up on all cylinders to clinch some goals and the two points at home before heading down to MK next week.

Andre urged all Sheffield fans to come to iceSheffield on Wednesday to give plenty of loud support to their Steeldogs team.

Andre said “ I appeal to you all to bring as many family and friends, work colleagues and neighbours as you can to this midweek game.”

“Your support is really appreciated and vital to the Steeldogs to help them take a win down to Milton Keynes, as it is like adding an extra player on to the ice. Let's make our Dog Pound in iceSheffield as uncomfortable for the opposition as we can, with your great support.”

Go Steeldogs....GO!

Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs v Peterborough Phantoms 3-0

A vital two points banked by the Steeldogs in a 3-0 blanking of the Phantoms. It was a less feisty game than anticipated by the good crowd who had braved the snow (special thanks to the great travelling Peterborough support, especially in view of the worsening forecast for the South East) but still an entertaining game.

Both teams had players missing as Andre Payette (suspension) and Lloyd Gibson (injury) were missing from the Steeldogs' lineup, and Jeff Glowa for the Phantoms.

The game flowed with mostly 5-on-5 hockey, in direct contrast to the last extremely physical encounter between these two teams. Play was end to end but both netminders, Ben Bowns and Damian King, repelled some good chances and a couple of short-handed breakaways in the first two periods, and the defence worked hard to contain the opposition forwards.

After a strong intermission team talk, Steeldogs picked up the pace more in the second but it was not until the third that the crowd finally saw some goals.

It was the home crowd that were celebrating as Janis Ozolins led the way with a trade mark goal at 43.15, ably assisted by Greg Wood and Steve Duncombe. Then, as with proverbial buses, a second was roofed by Ashley Calvert from a rebound off some good work by Ben Morgan and Ozolins, just over a minute later at 44.39.

The third and final goal came at 48.56 as Raivis Kurnigins got off the mark with his first goal in a Steeldogs' jersey, assisted by Morgan. The only real skirmish during the match was when Chris Sykes (possibly the smallest oplayer on the ice) and Will Weldon had a scrap, won by Sykes, and a very disappointed Peterborough Phantoms left with nothing but a very difficult journey home. Ben Bowns claimed a 2nd shut out against them on Sheffield ice and Raivis Kurnigins was awarded MOM and Ozolins a 1+1 on his birthday.

DON'T FORGET TONIGHT'S SEMI-FINAL AGAINST MILTON KEYNES - FACE OFF 7.30

Another big game for the Steeldogs on Sunday as they take on their northern rivals - Manchester Phoenix - 5.30pm at iceSheffield.

This will be the third tough game in quick succession for the Steeldogs but they will be targeting the two points off Manchester to clinch another first this season, to win on home ice as well as to keep the gap close at the top of the league table.

Manchester, currently sitting in 2nd League position, have been chalking up the wins in the last couple of months, despite Tony Hand still not being back on the ice following his ankle injury.

Steeldogs have also been winning games and can boast having the hottest goalie in the league and a very tight defence corps. The tense 1-0 semi-final win against MK last Wednesday demonstrated that with an outstanding performance by Ben Bowns in goal and the defencemen.

In their recent trip across the Pennines, Steeldogs held the Phoenix forwards down well during the first two goal-less periods, but they will still be smarting from the 3-0 loss inflicted on them in a short, sharp burst in the third period and will be aiming to erase that memory.

This fifth encounter promises to be another close-run but hard-hitting and fast battle as Steeldogs strive to finally beat Manchester in iceSheffield. Both teams want to keep in touching distance of Guildford so the two points are crucial to both but there can only be one winner!

Please come and join the Steeldogs and bring your friends for what promises to be another barnstormer!

Tickets for this game are available on the night, priced at:

What a night in Slough for the Steeldogs!

In subzero temperatures in the south, the northern Steeldogs raised the temperature inside the Hangar, shooting down the Slough Jets in style with a goal blitz of 9 goals to 2.

In recent low-scoring games Steeldogs' defence have been immense, on Saturday the forwards were also awesome, stunning the Jets players and fans alike. The travelling fans were rewarded early as Greg Wood (ass.Payette & Ozolins) lit the lamp just 26 seconds into the game.

Another clutch at 10:07 by Ashley Calvert (Gomeniuk & Gibson) and 10:13 by Janis Ozolins (Wood), saw Steeldogs go 3-0 up before Aaron Connolly pulled one back for Slough at 10:48, ending the first period 1-3. With plenty of roughing and cross-checking penalties, including an even fight between Scott Morris and Mark Galazzi , it looked set for the usual feisty and fast paced contest.

However, the first period was no fluke and Steeldogs piled on the pressure in the second with another 3 goals in just over 2 minutes. Ozolins led the way at 24:33 (Wood) followed by Edgars Bebris at 25:43 (ass Duncombe) and Ozolins for his hat trick at 26:46 (Sykes & Morgan)

More misery for the Jets followed as Bebris fired in his second at 36:16 (Gibson & Morgan) and Ozolins did likewise with his fourth at 37:14 (Payette & Morgan). The Jets had no answer to the Steeldogs' dominance in the second period and it ended 8-1 to the visitors.

The third period saw Jets come out a little more fired up but could only pull back one goal, despite Andre resting a few players during the final 20 minutes as he rolled out all his other lines.

Slough single strike came early in the period at 41:05 through Ryan Watt before Bebris claimed his hat trick at 56.24 to complete the final scoreline of a 9-2 demolition of the Jets.

A great team effort with Steeldogs forwards tearing Slough's defence apart and Steeldogs defence plus Ben Bowns shutting down their forwards, with a well deserved MOM going to Janis Ozolins.

Sheffield Steeldogs 2 Manchester Phoenix 1

Sheffield Steeldogs celebrated ecstatically after Ben Morgan scored the winning sudden death OT goal at iceSheffield on Sunday, as they clinched another of owner Shane Smith's pre-season targets by beating Manchester on home ice.

After demolishing Slough Jets away on Saturday in a 9-2 goal-fest, they returned to Sheffield to face an in-form Manchester Phoenix team but with only one goal in mind despite their 3rd difficult game in four days - a win.

With both teams scoring 9 goals on their opponents the previous night, it was set to be an unpredictable game. As it turned out, it was the usual tight, fast-paced and feisty game between these arch rivals.

Although Steeldogs edged the possession in the opening minutes, it was Manchester who took the lead at 8:34 as Ben Wood fired the puck in on a well-taken penalty shot, leaving Sheffield chasing an equaliser.

There was plenty of action on and off the puck during the game but incredibly, for a Steeldogs v Phoenix game, the game was allowed to flow for almost the entire 60 minutes, bar one two minute penalty on Payette at 12:22.

Ben Bowns made some more incredible top draw multiple saves to prevent Phoenix doubling their lead before Steeldogs' Janis Ozolins grabbed the equaliser at the other end at 36:33 (assisted by Ashley Calvert and Andrew Hirst), amidst pressure on the opposition net.

Both teams strove to clinch the winner in the third period but Steeldogs came out the stronger, out shooting Manchester but found Steve Fone matched Ben Bowns in fine form throughout the game. Overtime was needed to separate the teams but it only took just under 2 minutes for Ben Morgan to fire in the winning goal after receiving a pass out from behind the net by Greg Wood (assisted Ozolins).

Sheffield Steeldogs finally achieved their long awaited win against Manchester on home ice and it was well deserved. Pavel Gomeniuk was awarded MOM.

Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs meet Guildford Flames in the Cup Final

The Steeldogs now know their fellow Cup Finalists after a tight 2nd leg of the Cup Semi-Final down at the Spectrum between the Guildford Flames and Manchester Phoenix, following a tied 2-2 game in Manchester last Saturday.

With the lead fluctuating between the teams, the game was again tied 4-4 in the second by David Longstaff, but it took until around 8 minutes from time for the deadlock to be broken as Guildford claimed the winning goal for a 5-4 aggregate score.

Steeldogs' Saturday fixture in Guildford has suddenly become much more spicy as the two finalists meet ahead of the home and away Cup contest, in a battle for league points and positions.

Further information will follow as soon as the two fixtures have been finalised.

Before then, the Steeldogs have a busy schedule as they travel to Surrey for Saturday's interesting match v the Flames, followed by a return to iceSheffield on Sunday at 5.30pm for a final regular season visit by the Slough Jets.

The Jets beat Bracknell Bees tonight, moving two points clear of Steeldogs and have found their scoring touch with 10 goals in their last two games. This, coupled with Flames putting 9 goals past Swindon last Sunday could mean a tough weekend for Steeldogs defencemen.

Tickets available for the Slough game on Sunday night at Steeldogs' ticket desk, face off 5.30pm.

Adult £9.00, Concession £6.50, Child £3.50, Under 8's Free, Family £20.00

Steeldogs look forward to seeing and hearing you all at the game as they strive to keep their home winning streak intact.
