Do you remember the quadrangle that the classrooms were arranged round? And do you remember the headmistress - Miss Gagan. She seemed to be very old and was in a wheelchair, I think. Also the only male teacher - Mr Brown and a very stern but excellent J4 teacher called Miss Linacre, I think?

Most of the 1930's schools were designed round quadrangles:- High Storrs was, as was Abbeydale Grange Upper School (the former Grange Grammar)

If you "Google-maps" search for Byron Wood School(the old Ellesmere school) you'll see quite clearly the Quadrangles.

Herries School (the old building, now apparently demolished) was built to that design.Shirecliffe School, next door to Herries still shows the single quad. Longley primary is built around 2. There are also identical schools at the old Southey school, Pipworth Schools Woodthorpe and the Standhouse (now demolished on the Manor...

I had forgotten the name of headmistresses who was in a wheelchair, infact I've forgotten the names of all the teachers there, but I do remember the gray haired lady from the SS who used to do her caning ..

I also remember being amazed one week at not having been punished by her..

Happy days...

The entrance and playground for the Infants block was at the bottom of Cradock road. I never made the senior school we moved just before I became 12, but I believe their entrance and playground was halfway up Cradock road.

The junior entrance and playground was at the bottom end of Brimmesfield road near Spring Lane, and off to the left was the prefabricated dining hall which was also used as a class room.

A little higher up Brimmesfield road was another small playground with it's own gate that we used in J1. This was also used at different times by invalid children that were being taught there in separate class rooms ? at the side ....

I would concur PT. Two of the schools in which I've worked, which were originally built in the '30s had quadrangles....one having two and the other one. They were constructed of good quality brick with stone features and solid oak fittings......quality never to be subsequently repeated. The design was modelled on public schools with quads and playing fields; the emphasis being on ventilation and outdoor space. Hence windows were large and plentiful and you could see out of them, unlike their Victorian predecessors, where you could only view the heavens! Also, for the first time, they had specialist teaching rooms eg house craft/woodwork.
