How easy is it for a female to get a council flat ?

Recommended Posts

They become a priority if they become homeless and they become homeless if the parent kicks them out of the house, I know one person that kicked her daughter out so she could get a house and she got one very quickly, but it will be down to luck, an house will have to be available and there can’t be anyone with a greater priority.

Yep, that's true. Children make you a priority. If a single woman with no health problems goes homeless she will not be a priority. If she has children she will be a priority.

However people with kids who are not homeless will not be considered as much of a priority as those with kids who are not considered homeless, eg living with relatives etc.

But it's true as much as in people with children will get far higher priority so one of the quickest ways to get a flat is to get pregnant and go homeless as those priorities bump you way up the list.

Making yourself deliberately homeless doesn't count though does it!

Even if you make yourself homeless they don't give you a house or flat, they will put you in suitable accommodation until they have a property to offer you and they confirm they have a duty to house you. B&B's, bedsits, shared houses are all suitable for someone who is homeless. Sadly many are prepared to lie to get themselves homeless priority but just being pregnant doesn't give you a bump up the list.

It works for some because the one I know is 18 and lived at home with her mother and child the week before getting the council house.

It's a myth. Someone on our street tried this her Mother told us all about it, teenage daughter tried for a flat but was turned down, then tried going homeless but didn't like the B&B they put her in so came back home. Then tried to lie about being pregnant by taking someone else's test stick to the housing (I bet that made someone at Howden House's day) was unhappy that they required a doctor's cert proving pregnancy. Luckily she had a caring boyfriend who dutifully made her pregnant so they toddled into the housing for their priority points. They were told you have to be over a certain term in your pregnancy (I can't recall how many weeks it was but they were unhappy because it was after the final cut off for termination) before the housing even considered the baby as a person. They decided it would be for the best if they kept the baby because that would allow them a bigger house when the council gave them one AND it would mean at least five extra years for them to find jobs.

Sadly the housing worker hadn't explained thoroughly and when the baby was born and they went to claim their prize they were turned down and still live with the Mother on our street.

Now the teenager stays at home to look after the lovely little boy she had and her dutiful boyfriend (who only stays 3 nights per week because that doesn't affect their money) is attending a college course two days a week.

The Mother is shocked that you only can stay home until baby is five, sadly she can't look after grandson because she has health problems (undisclosed health problems) but she does think they (? I assume she means the Govt.) should pay until the baby is 16 because stay at home Mums do a better job.

The baby was 1 year old just before Christmas so unless things have changed in the last year/ 18 months they don't get priority.

Makes you want to weep eh?

Just to add the girl is now 19.

What a very sad state of affairs.

You can get priority a lot more easily. You just have to know the system.

You shouldn't really be having children to get a flat, or even a house for that matter, but 25 years ago ANYBODY could go down and get one without having to wait very long at all.

Nowadays it is far far harder, the youth of today have been dealt a very bad hand.

What you should be having children for is to boost your income. The amount of money yielded in CTC's and increased entitlement to WTC's is well worth it. Just because you can get condoms for free from the GP/GUM clinic doesn't mean that you should use them.

For it is not one's earnings from working that determine a person income.

Get yourself up the duff and you'll get enough in benefits tax credits to cover a mortgage. If I were a bird I reckon I'd have about 4 kids by now, a car and a house.

Only problem is, the tories are in now, so pretty soon, working will determine a greater part of your income.

What you can do, is go down and get one straight away if your a pensioner, even if you own your own house. Straight to top of list.

It does work for some but not as intended by the council.

If you were to tell the council that you were pregnant and your parents had thrown you out, and when the council check your parents confirm this, then you would be given emergency housing, B&B etc. If you don't pay your own rent (housing benefit covers it) you could lie to the council, let HB pay your rent at the B&B and stay living at home with parents until the pesky council  give you what you want.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I know people exploit the rules but it is an exploit they don't just give people houses for having babies.

The trouble is we have social landlords who are governed by lots of red tape versus people with such morality that having children to increase benefits/ get houses/ stay off work and generally leech from society is not just ok but encouraged almost like a career choice. :(
