depoix
if i remember correctly ash wednesday was the first day of lent when the devout covered them selves in sack cloth and ashes to show others they had given up the good life in favour of their beliefs, dont think they had hash tho ,unless its some form of showing that you give up things by eating cheap food, instead of using the old sack cloth and ash routine
evildrneil
Isn't hash usually made with mashed potatos? Perhaps it's made with potatoes that have had all their eyes cut out first???
J1mb01984
Blind ash is essentially the same as corned beef ash using all the same ingredients. However in a blind ash there is very little to no corned beef. This version of the dish was created by mother's with many mouths to feed but not alot to go around. francypants
Hash is cooked in a saucepan on top of the cooker. Stew is cooked either on top of the cooker or in the oven. Hash has thinner gravy and is served in a bowl on it's own. Stew has thicker gravy and is served on a plate with dumplings, pancakes, Yorkshire pudding or mashed potatoes. Yummy. gene
Always had hash and dumplings - never with Yorkshire puddings. The meat may have been of doubtful quality but was supposed to be steak and kidney. Heard of blind scouse but never blind hash. I cook the meat and veg in a pressure cooker but leave the lid off when putting in the dumplings

fleetwood
I'm pretty sure it's got nothing to do with Hash or food, I have a friend who if we meet on Ash Wednesday, he shows up with ash rubbed on his face, strange but true. fleetwood

pattricia
Blind ash was made up of milk , potatoes, and onions. It was delicious. With added pepper and salt.
