Mikewilson
Did anyone who used to work here at Darnall Works? I worked there for a short period and would love to hear from others who did.
Davyoldboy
Hi, I started my apprenticeship in August 1972 at Davy's. Charlie Williams was the Training school manager. Alan Clarke and Bill Osgathorpe were the two guys who did the training. My old apprentice mates were Mick Holloway( now Senior Sales Manager at Forgemasters) Kevin Oates, Graham Clarkson, Andrew (Sam) Sargeant. They were great days. Learning a trade and learning about life. The company was vast and had so many characters!! I still say that this company set me up for the rest of my life and sadly we now have a massive void of engineering skilled people since the apprenticeship schemes were withdrawn in the eighties. Some old names I fondly remember were Arthur Smith(Foreman) what a man! Fantastic engineer and always willing to help teach young engineers. Les Taylor and Gerry Wright in the CNC programming department, again, fantastic engineers and responsible for setting standards that are sadly missed today. Mick Burkinshaw, Pete Cross, what senses of humour We laughed so much with the constant mickey taking!! Christmas Eve parties at the Sports Club, does anybody remember Chris (Sam) Rooms dancing to the Northern Soul music!!! Great days, great times and fondly missed. If only British manufacturing could recreate companies like this, I am totally convinced we would be a lot better off.
ptrA
When I finished my electrical apprenticeship, I got myself a job at Davy's,. 1960 to 1970. It was a good firm to work for and probably one of the best apprentice training school's in the City.
spider1
How about Derek Hogg and John Bradley . We used to run a fishing coach on a saturday. One sat coach was late and Hoggy turned up with a double decker bus. Edited August 24, 2015 by spider1
Davyoldboy
Yes, I remember Derek Hogg and John Bradley. Derek was an electrician and John was a machinist. Sounds typical of Hoggy with the double decker bus !!!

Davyoldboy
Sad news about John, If you see Hoggy, see if he remembers a young blonde haired lad down three bay called Alan Scott !! Tell him, it used to take him ages to come and repair my machine :-))

No71
I worked both sides of the drive. Anyone know what became of Dave Booker (Maint fitter), Martin Smith (Davy Roll but he was in the school at Darnall), Robert Maycock (6Bay) & Ian Hammerton (Jack's lad)?
