BBC Pointless (or how dumb is our nation?)

Recommended Posts

Every fortnight Private Eye collates the most gob smacking answers from the various TV and Radio quizzes in the media in Dumber Britain. Some right humdingers.

I think the fact that most ordinary people on TV for the first time are stressed out, may cause some of these howlers.

Whilst we might laugh at some howlers made by quiz contestants on television, I would never consider it a true reflection of their intelligence given the circumstances, and it certainly isn't the point of this thread.

The show Pointless is based on researching the knowledge of the general population, and comparing this against the knowledge/skills/luck of some contestants. It's the former, not the latter, which is sometimes unbelievable.

Apparently 11 people out of a hundred couldn't identify a picture of the Earth, the blue planet with sea and continents and stuff on it, as the Earth. :loopy:

Going on pointless would be pretty pointless. You have a very low chance of winning a little bit of money. The hardest work for the lowest return.

A sensible person would go on deal or no deal, you don't need to have any knowledge and you can quite easily come away with £5-10k by dealing early.

Or there is the Chase, which is probably the fairest of the shows. You have to use a bit of knowledge, but there is a chance of winning a couple of grand, sometimes more.

Does anybody remember watching celebrity mastermind lat year with Stacey Solomon, that was possibly the best bit of tv in the whole year. Shame it isn't on youtube, but there is a short clip of one of her answers;

She was also asked 'What famous French sparking wine used in celebrating is named after a region in NE France?' She answered 'Jacobs Creek'
