European Figure Skating 23-29 January 2012 Motorpoint Arena

Recommended Posts

European Figure Skating Championships 2012 will be held in Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena from Sunday 22nd until Sunday 29th January 2012.

As England gears up to be the focus of worldwide sporting attention in 2012 for the London Olympic Games, another major event is set to catapult the country into the global limelight.

European Figure Skating Championships are being held in England for the first time in over 20 years after Sheffield was successful in its bid to stage the prestigious event.

It is the third largest competition involving figure skaters, behind the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.

Nearly 200 skaters from 40 countries, including many Olympians, will take part in the prestigious championship in Sheffield from January 23-29.

In the line-up of world-class skaters will be 2006 Olympic champion and three-time World champion, Evgeni Plushenko.

The International Skating Union (ISU) granted Plushenko an exemption to compete in the European Championships 2012 last week following a request from Russia. http://www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk/whats-on/european-figure-skating-championships-2012/

Hi,

Ive got tickets for this for me and my gf and have seen that doors open super early, but the schedule starts in the afternoon. We've never been so am wondering what time should we arrive? What's happening in the morning?

Also, once in, are we able to leave when we want to, i.e. to pop to Centretainement for lunch/dinner?!

Lastly, I assume we be all wrapped up and warm with us potentially sitting in a freezer all day, unless of course you have some other magical mystical way of keeping the ice cold and the room warm...?!

Cheers

Each day has different activity but as a general guide the early mornings are the skaters practice sessions & preliminary qualifying rounds - these are all included in your ticket and you can attend if you wish. A full schedule is available here http://europeans2012.co.uk/files/uploads/1326472190-EC2012_ColouredTimeSchedule_12-01-12.pdf

You can leave the building but must ensure that a steward scans your tickets out before you leave the building so your ticket remains valid and you can re-enter the building.

Wrap up warm - ice pad is in use for 16 hours each day so temperature of building is very cold.

Went to the opening ceremony for this last night. Very entertaining - it's a pity there weren't more people there :-(. Can the arena mole confirm whether John & Sinead Kerr came on during the opening ceremony and skated with the kids? We were so far back we couldn't see & the lighting gantry prevented us seeing the big screen.

And does this occasion get covered on Look North? Of course not, it didn't take place in Leeds. It might have Prince Edward there making a speech but that's not interesting enough for our local news programme!

Robin Cousins’ choreographed a group of 100 young skaters to perform a unique routine never seen before. Also dazzling spectators with their performances on ice were seven-time British Ice Dance champions, John and Sinead Kerr.

Over 25,000 people here throughout the event.

On a national level BBC Breakfast was live from the Arena this morning and you can now get all the action live on the BBC Red Button.

Was on live on the red button throughout the Championships but the coverage on BBC was dropped to accommodate the over-running tennis. BBC still have coverage on their web site http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01bgnhb/European_Figure_Skating_Championships_2012_30_01_2012/ but only of the competition - hope this helps.
