Alan Johnson says unions are delusional & returning us to the 1970s

Recommended Posts

What was so bad about the 70's?

I had a load of money, travelled the world, met my wife and had our first child.

Then the fools of this country were led by the nose, by Murdoch.

They voted Thatcher in, and the country went to the dogs.

She destroyed it completely and utterly, and still some fools think she did a good job.

She is responsible for the position you find yourselves in today.

They're only bitter because their own poltical party (maybe they don't actually have one but just like to argue over anything) as come in for some stick because of bullying, rising unemployment and our unelected PM is getting frustrated, spat his dummy out and resorted to hurling insults.

Funny old thing.

Those foreign owned gas/electricity companies often charge more in other countries for gas and electricity. Electricity is somewhat cheaper in France than it is in the UK (because they use a lot of that new, cooler electricity ;)) but compared to many other countries, gas and electricity in the UK are very cheap.

Do you think they should give you gas and electricity at a discounted price?

Here's an electricity price comparison.

And here's one for domestic gas.

Interesting data Rupert. However, you could pull the same trick with different tariffs within the UK, or even within the same company.

Are the figures mean values... or something else. We'd need to know to make sense of it all.

The links are to pages in the 'Europe's Energy Portal' Website. (Billo the Wisp's site is a copy from the Energy portal, but it does link to the original site.)

There are links to the methodology for both the Gas link and the page copied by Billo on The European Portal website. (If you follow the link I gave you for gas and scroll down, it will take you to the electricity data.)

us by foreign owned gas/electricity companies bumping up prices because they can get away with it :loopy:

Even if that were true it is a price worth paying for keeping the power switched on. If Scargill had his way he would have been able to turn off your lights, factory machinery and operating theatre lights everytime he wasn't given exactly what he wanted.

It may or may not be the cheapest power, but the cost to this country when the power kept getting turned off was massive.

If the data on that website is as accurate as their English I shall burn my furniture.

These shop stewards are educated in union matters, but may not be au fait with the history of Mongolian pottery or the poetry of Thomas Hardy. They understand that businesses are fundementally exploitative of workers customers and even suppliers-something you either do not realise or have chosen to ignore. Many union leaders are Fabians and teetotal so please desist from the working mens clubs as you sound like an embittered octogenarian.
Indeed, they understand little beyond the scope of their union interests and do not have the professional or social education to deal with issues at a senior management level.

As for the Fabian thing - of course, a very high proportion of union types are unashamed socialists.

Yes they were heady days and a working man was treated with far greater respect than today.
