With Croatia due to join the EU & EURO will this help the debt problems?

I'm not sure that it is the interests of Croatia or the Eurozone for another ailing economy to join the bankrupt Euroclub.

It will help the UK to increase our debt and unemployment figures.

The Germans would welcome them with open arms. The more poor countries there are in the EU, the better it is for their exports. If the Euro failed and the Germans had to go back to using the Deutsch Mark, their currency would be valued much higher which would hit their exports. All the poor countries in the Euro keep the value of the Euro down, great for the maufacturing powerhouse of Europe that is Germany, this is why they need to save the Euro so much.

In other words the Germans are doing the intelligent thing economically. They manufacture and export what people want to buy. We used to do that till Thatcher came along.

Its a good job you don't believe everything you read on the forum.

You might remember Nissan Honda and Toyota all buiding brand new factories here once Thatcher had sorted the strikes and the union closed shops.

The appetite for new cars may have waned in the UK, but the export market is thriving. Car manufacturers shipped 80% of their output overseas last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Car production has recently seen a renaissance (it was in truly dire straits a few years back). Car-makers saw a 1.6% rise in production in December alone. A total of 1,343,810 vehicles trundled off the assembly line last year - a 5.8% increase on 2010. That’s not bad, considering that UK car sales have fallen by 4.4%.

‘We have some of the best plants in the UK that are amongst the most productive in Europe,’ says business secretary Mark Prisk. ‘The automotive sector demonstrates that the UK can successfully compete for business across the world.’

It’s not just the vehicles themselves that are driving revenue. Britain made 2.5 million shiny new engines last year, up 4.9% on 2010. That’s a lot of vroom. Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, is glowing with pride. ‘UK vehicle and engine production continues to lead the manufacturing recovery,’ he says.

Who said anything about Croatia joining the Euro?

There are 17 EU member states which use the Euro as currency and 10 that do not.

You need to keep up Rupert. Them Euro wallas aren't daft. They made it a condition of EU membership, so every new EU member must join the Euro. Scotland should perhaps take note.

I am well aware of that provision but:

'Most other EU states are obliged to join the Euro once they meet the criteria to do so.'

Given that many of the problems in a number of countries in the Eurozone were caused by lax enforcement of those criteria, I suggest it could be quite a while before Croatia is obliged (or permitted) to adopt the Euro.

I did do the evil old bat a disservice but only by not pointing out that Blair made the imbalance between manufacturing and the financial sector even worse. See

The odd new car factory here and there didn't really counterbalance the obsession of stimulating the expansion of the financial sector which Thatcher turned into a fetish.

You also seem to have missed the fact that industries such as steel were brought into the 20th century. Productivity at British Steel inceased by around 350% in 10 years from 1979. It allowed our steel industry to actually compete in the world market. It is probably the only reason we have a steel industry today.
