irenewilde
Which is exactly what the Roman Catholic church rely upon - 'catch 'em young'. Do you think there's any chance of this thread staying on topic and not degenerating in to "all Catholics are evil and/or child abusers"?

It's a bit difficult to discuss the vagaries of the Catholic Church without reference to it, I find.
Daven
Do you think there's any chance of this thread staying on topic and not degenerating in to "all Catholics are evil and/or child abusers"? Where has anyone said that Catholics are either of these ?
Suffragette1
Where have I said that Catholics are either of these ? Actually, that isn't how I read your comment. I understood it to mean indoctrination works best when you get them young.

choogling
1. Is this person a Christian? 2. Has he been baptised? 3. Is he a practising Catholic? 4. Has he been through and does he accept the religious training required by the Catholic church before receiving Holy Communion? 5. Are there 'other reasons' why he may not be permitted to receive Holy Communion? If the answer to any of the first 4 is 'No' and/or the answer to the 5th is 'Yes' then the Catholic church is not 'Shooting itself in the foot' it is merely complying with its own rules. i suspect a no to 3 and
Bloomdido
Do you really think people have so little intellect? I consider religious indoctrination of children to be child abuse. People don't label their newborn as Tories or Socialists as that would be seen to be absurd, but calling a baby a Catholic is fine. How can a child understand the concept of the transthingymibob when they are told that the cracker and wine actually becomes the blood and flesh of their god? Next thing we will be accepting the body modification of week-old babies because God thinks it's cool.

I never made my personal views known to them until they reached an age where they were aware of atheism and were veering in that direction themselves. I wanted them to make up their own minds and not be influenced by me. We've discussed all the major faiths and left it at that.
