iansheff
I went to university as a mature student and really enjoyed the experience. You don't say how mature a student you are, however I know of someone who applied and was turned down for a student loan as they would have been over 54 when starting the university course. Whether that is still the same now I don't know.
Twiglet
The loan you can use for anything (although it's supposed to be for fees, etc). No you can't; the fees portion of the loan is paid direct to the university to you never see it
alchresearch
It depends on the uni but I've seen open days in February, June and even last late as August for the September term. I went to the latter back in 2003, it was much more fun the second time round as a mature student. You got on so much better with the lecturers for one.
