cardoor
We all knew the Met are bent and racist but just how is £35,000 on phone calls to the speaking clock justified? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16616790

It tells you in the article.

Chris_Sleeps
officers and staff, many without internet access, needed to know exact times If only they had some way of carrying a device that can show them the time whereever they go. Maybe hung on their wrist or something.
ChrisT70
speaks volumes of waste in the police force. compulsory wrist watches for all!

lolli_pop
If only they had some way of carrying a device that can show them the time whereever they go. Maybe hung on their wrist or something. They need the exact time sometimes. Watches aren't necessarily accurate enough. It sounds trivial but cases could be thrown out of court for something as minor as time discrepencies. Would you rather they pay for calls to the speaking clock or waste money on failed court cases?

Exactly. To put it into context, this was 110,000 calls over two years. The force has almost 50,000 staff. That's just over one call per staff member per year. Given that quite often they do need to know the exact time, this is much more cost effective than buying them all time signal controlled watches. verona
What complete twaddle. I have never heard of a court case collapsing because of a time discrepency, unless it was hours out. If they are in interview with a suspect they are not going to ring the speaking clock at the start of interview.
dawny1970
a cheap digital will loose perhaps 10 seconds a YEAR, there is no court in the land that would throw a case out on such a small deviation in time, thats why the police in courts say at approx such and such time, not EXACTLY!!!
