I was driving on the main road on what i think is st marys road. wow of all the roads this has changed. This used to be a residential area with rows of terrace housing. does any one remember them being knocked down or did you live there.

I also noticed a small playground now a sports area. I remember it had the best slide really high. I remember paving stones high walls and rusty railings. did you go there as a child and when did the play ground go.

While working for the Sheffield council in the mid to late 60s I opperated the JCB used to remove the coffins in St Marys church yard in order to widen the road for the duel carriageway I can assure it was NOT a pleasant job we also had police & a government officer on site to log any remains and jewelry found.

Hi, Are you sure it was the 60's and not possibly the 70's as I lived and played around there as a child and I was born in 1967. We sat and watched the diggers and saw some bones etc in the soil. I remember the police being there too and imagined that bad people had buried dead bodies there without anyone knowing and they had been found out ! Kids imaginations eh? the play ground was fantastic and we played there all day every day , unless rough kids came from other areas .

Oh and we played in all the big pipes etc as they built the subway . Wearing wellies that were far too big for us and taking half the water and mud home in them as we didn't care that the water was far deeper than our wellies were high . Mum was never very happy at the water gushing out all over the kitchen floor !

I could never understand how the church gave permission for some of the grave stones to be used as part of the path and road inside the church yard . I'm not religious but it seemed very disrespectful . I'm sorry for rambling on but this is a fantastic trip down memory lane for me :)

Hi LittlePink Thinking back you are probably right about the dates it could well have been the mid 70s its the brain cell it goes a bit off course from time to time one thing that does still stick in my mind is the terrible smell that we got if a coffin got broken open :loopy: .
