fruitisbad
It's all about snobbery, if Bill Gates wasn't the Head of Microsoft, he'd be one of the most respected men in the Universe IMO, but everyone hates MS because of Xbox and of course, Windows, so naturally Bill Gates cops for all the hatred. I quite liked windows

anywebsite
The ones who give him the bad press are the greedy, grabbing, selfish, unfeeling, uncaring money pigs who wish to make as big a pile of money as possible and do not mind who suffers for it. Like the ones who dared to write innovative software only to have their businesses crushed by Microsoft's illegal anti-competitive behaviour? Yeah, he's all heart that guy. Yeah, he's all heart that guy. That's the point, I would say he way like that but has changed. whereas jobs wanted to destroy android as a phone OS and was happy to sink millions into suing rival phone manufacturers over pointless nonsense. The other co founder gave a good interview where he could see where this was heading again. Apple famously messed up by having their operating system on their products. along came windows, available on other manufacturers products and wiped the floor with them. now the interesting thing is he said windows wasn;t a good product, but admits that android is a very good product. maybe they will learn mistakes from their past. You realise that Microsoft is going round threatening to sue Android device makers if they don't pay up? They're running a patent extortion racket. Worse than that, they wont even tell anybody which of their patents they think Android violates, so that Google could work around or fight against the patents. HTC has to pay quite a large royalty to Microsoft for every Android phone they sell. It's been said that MS makes more money from (some) Android phone sales that it does by selling a Windows phone. Phanerothyme
I think that had Bill Gates not indulged in sharp practices in order to build his fledgling empire, it might not have flown at all - and there would be no-one literally giving away tens of billions of dollars to eradicate polio amongst other things. Weird how things turn out. And yes, both he and Buffet have been saying this for a few years.
anywebsite
fair enough at least he gives away most of his profits No he doesn't, not by any stretch of the imagination. In 2010 MS made $52.76 billion. The Gates foundation had total charitable distributions of $3.2bn. Phanerothyme, you seriously think nobody else gives to charity except Bill Gates? If it wasn't for their sharp business practices the rest of the world would be richer. If they want to pay more in taxes then they could start by not dodging them: http://microsofttaxdodge.com/ All they had to do to be successful is get the contract for DOS from IBM & not be as bad as Apple. Remember it was IBM that created the PC, Microsoft just crippled it with poorly written software.

PeteMorris
Bill Gates might be giving away a lot of money and that's laudible, but, if microsoft catch you with a dodgy version of Windows or some other program they'll still 'shaft you'.
