Tony
I hadn't realised that Mein Kampf is banned in many places around the world. Copyright is owned by Bavaria state but it lapses in 2016, 70 years after the author died but for now they resist it being printed. Should any book be banned? Can words ever hurt? Should Mein Kampf be banned?* * Yes, I've read it, some of it. It wasn't very good
fruitisbad
the irony of the nazi book burning is lost on a lot of people I think.
alchemist
I read it when I was a rebellious teen as it was the rebellious thing to do. It was as boring as hell!!!!
Harleyman
It hasnt been banned in my part of the world. There's a copy on the shelves at my local library but I dont think anyone bothers reading it. Banning books generally increases people's curiosity and then the desire to get a copy generally happens. They want to know why it's banned and what the book contains that causes it to be banned. It's all a matter of human curiosity. Lady Chatterly's Lover was banned for many years and many were anxious to find out why as it was rumoured to contain a lot of "naughty stuff"

It kind of makes a mockery of the whole process.
fruitisbad
most banned books are considered quite tame by todays standards

It was never offensive in the first place

andygardener
Interesting question. I suppose it's a case of historical document vs current call to violence. In Britain it's a tedious rant, in Germany they clearly still fear it's potency. While we don't explicitly ban books we do frown on and jail people not for possesion but for expanding on certain books which we see as a threat, such as Milestones, with good reason. Should any views, however abhorent, be sacrosanct when committed to the page? No. Should we be very carefull about which views we censor? Yes.
