Youtube question

Recommended Posts

When you look at music vids or sport on youtube and don't download just look are you using up your monthly download allowance ? I stress just looking on your PC and NOT downloading. Cheers.

You have to download the content (from the youtube server to your PC) in order to watch it on your PC (or mobile, or tablet, or...). Otherwise you couldn't watch it at all. The 0s and 1s making up the Youtube page, video, audio etc. don't just "appear" on your PC out of nothing.

It doesn't 'look' like a download (like when you clink a link and have to save a file), but it's still 0s and1s coming down the tube to your device - so using your 'monthly download allowance' just the same (same as your emails, webpages, etc, etc).

Great answer …….. after reading the OP I had my doubts but you explained it well.

As above. Obviously, not as much allowance as if you were actually downloading the video to your computer, but yeah you're still using your downloads.
Depends on the resolution and file format.

You are watching the video (whether saving it then watching it, or watching it in real-time as a stream).

Potentially, not as much, just as much or even more allowance, as if you were actually downloading the video to your computer.

A streamed youtube video is (typically) a low-res FLV file, with a much lower file size for the 'same content' than the same video as a higher res DiVx download. That would be 'not as much allowance'.

But, once you factor in the various resolutions now available on Youtube, e.g. up to 1080, when the DiVx or mkv (etc.) would be half that or less, then that can soon become 'more allowance'.

Watching the youtube vid in 640 is going to use up less allowance than watching it (still on Youtube) in HD (720 or 1080 res).

Downloading the vid (as a DiVx) in 320 is going to use up less allowance than watching it on Youtube in HD.

Downloading the vid (as a mkv) in 640 is going to use up less allowance than downloading it (as a DiVx) in 640.

Etc, etc.

(all relative examples to illustrate the point..then there's the new IPTV streaming to consider, à la e.g. NetFlix & LoveFilm - that do not use low-res file formats, and make things still more complicated).
