ANGELFIRE1
Any builder types on here who could offer advice.. Has any one ever had leaking brick work. One of my relatives who lives on a gable end which is always hit by wind and rain was told by a builder that her brickwork needs sealing, not re-pointing between the red brick, but actualy the bricks themselves need coating with sealer. Is it genuine - or a bit of a fiddle. Cheers Angel.
Gazza58
Sealing bricks is certainly genuine, but you have to make sure the pointing is in good order, otherwise its sort of like having a rip in a raincoat.

I guess the brickwork is a bit worn and the faces are eroding, therefore more likely to soak water up, and then through to the inside causing damp.. top4718
If the bricks have been exposed to rain/wet conditions for a length of time they become porous allowing any future water to soak through causing internal damp, I assume the builder has recommended the sealer as some form of "tanking" against future problems, so not a rip off but agree with others that repointing would be needed as well. monkey104
I had some pointing done then bought some brick waterproofing from B and Q. It cost about a fiver for a gallon, put it in one of those weed sprayers and coated the wall. The rain just runs off it now.
ANGELFIRE1
Aye, thanks for that chaps. As my relative is an old age pensioner who lives on her own, I just thought it might be a "scam" of some kind, seems that his advice was sound then. Thank you for your replies. Angel. poppins
I read that bricks shouldn't be sealed as that just holds in the moisture, waterproofing, yes, sealing no.
Frank Sidney
I wouldn't have it done either unless there is a problem with damp...
charliewag
my neighbour has the same problem even though the brickwork has been pointed and the window re-sealed. the brickwork was waterproofed this week so let's see if it works.
