If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty. Find out what the change in the law means for you. The new vehicle insurance law - don't be caught out Stay insured - stay legal Watch a video on the new rules on being insured and penalties you could face Stay insured If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times. The exceptions are: if you have made a SORN for the vehicle if your vehicle has been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 – unless it was brought back into use if your vehicle is recorded as stolen, passed or sold to the motor trade or between registered keepers if your vehicle is recorded scrapped or permanently exported by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA)
big_g
How much to insure it just for you rather than you and your son?

davyboy
I think you've answered my question Davy - it doesn't have to be insured if it's off road! Yes, as long as it's been SORNed
Rupert_Baehr
You really do need to do the sums though. The car is worth £2000. How much will it be worth next year? And the year after? It costs you £1400 to insure. As others have said, how much would it cost you to insure it as the only driver? The car will need some maintenance. If you don't service it at least annually, you're looking for problems. If you leave it sitting outside and you don't use it for an extended period, it may develop additional (expensive) problems. (Been there!) How many days a year do you drive and how many miles on each of those days? - If you use the car infrequently, it may be cheaper to hire one when you need it. If you use the car for (say) 6 months a year and it's laid-up for the other 6 months it may pay you to sell the one you've got at the end of the in-use period and buy another when you next need it. - Particularly if you're buying a cheap car and you can get a freshly-serviced car with 6 months tax and test. There are a lot of variables! (If you come up with an answer, let me know ... I need a car in Europe for 6 months each year and I haven't got the answer yet.) krisc
Do you know of a friend or relative who could use it and have them as a main/named driver on the insurance, of course i would expect them to pay the difference.
