Do shops have to give a receipt

While we're on about receipts how many of you know it's unlawful in Great Britain for a shop, or any other business, to refuse you a 'REFUND?' If you purchase something and decide within 14 days that you don't want it, so long as you haven't used whatever you purchased you are allowed to take it back and ask for your payment to be refunded. If the business owner, or their manager, or assistant refuses to give you a refund 'THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW'. Report them immediately.

So i buy some frozen food, keep it 10 days, not under refrigeration, I can legally insist on a refund, or I can buy a product with a few days shelf life, keep it beyond this and legally demand a refund, surely not. where is this law quoted?

Looks like you have found the answer

"We can't do anything without a receipt".

There is no legal obligation for shops to even give you a receipt, let alone for you to keep it. Shops should accept any proof of purchase, like a bank statement or credit card bill (if you paid by credit or debit card). If you paid in cash and have not kept the receipt, you may have difficulty proving that you bought the item.

If they do not issue a receipt their HMRC returns are likely to be wrong.I insist on a receipt and would report anyone not issuing one,or request a refund at once.

Quite right. Folk must be extra careful when paying by card as some unscrupulous establishments have been known to take cashback without the card holders consent!

In summary: Anyone not insistent on a receipt of any financial transaction in this day and age is clearly a fool. :)

I would normally try an item on but I had just finished work and was a bit stinky lol but it was a really sweet iron man t-shirt.

lol maybe that's why they had the policy. Maybe people were sweating in the sports clothes then trying to return them, and saying "We don't do refunds" just just easier than saying..."You smell".

Haha.

I'm quoting this law from a newspaper cutting I have titled; 'No Refund' notices are illegal.

If there was some way I could publish the cutting on here I would, just to prove what I've said. But unfortunately I cannot publish the cutting on here because that would be a breach of copyright law.

I had my OH chain repaired at a certain jewelers who phone and let you know how much the repair will cost before they go ahead and was told over the phone the cost was £25.25, when we went to collect it the assistant told my OH it was £30 if I had not been with him he would have paid the £30, (£4.75 in someones pocket )

Exceptions:

Fresh food and flowers (for obvious reasons of decay!), personalised goods, accommodation, transport, newspapers and magazines, sealed audio, video or computer software that has been opened or a service that has already started, can't be cancelled.

That's absolute rubbish.

Why do people in Sheffield have this odd theory that every shop is out to rip them off?
