Its probably because no one would ever call these munters love, darling or babes instead refering to them as Fella, mate and Geezer. Its not something I've heard people use in that context - it would seem very creepy coming from a bus driver you had never met before. Someone said on Breakfast this morning, if you don't like terms of endearment, don't ever go to live in the North, which made me choke into my cornflakes.
