Tony
Traveller once seemed synonymous with New Age Traveller - not something that I imagine Gypsies see themselves as. But now we seem to talk about Travellers, schools have Traveller Children's Policies and councils build Traveller Camps, though I'm not aware of any special provisions for patchouli oil disposal or moonchild aura analysis. What changed?
Dingus
I've had a Morris Traveller and an Austin Gypsy. They were both crap.
GrapeApe
Here's one explanation that answers your question. There are travellers who aren't gypsies. Regards
melthebell
gypsies are travellers, new age travellers are travellers, the term traveller has become the norm to lazily call all of em, just like ipod or hoover are used to describe the various models of items we use
AJ sheffield
I've had a Morris Traveller and an Austin Gypsy. They were both crap. Did you have to pay road tax on them.
Badlittlepup
I think sometimes it differentiates (particularly amongst travellers/gypsies themselves) between Romany gypsies and Irish travellers who are distinct groups with different origins. Conrod
I heard the expression 'rats on wheels' used by somebody the other day. Harsh, perhaps.

mj.scuba
A lot of gypsies don't travel anywhere, so are not "travellers".
Resident
A lot of gypsies don't travel anywhere, so are not "travellers". For example, the Dale Farm lot.
