Child Brides in the western world

Here is an interesting point of fact.

Isabelle of France

Marriage to Richard II

Isabelle of France (1389-1409), oldest daughter of King Charles VI, was not quite seven years old when she married Richard II as his second wife in 1396. He seems to have been very kind to her. In the Middle Ages princely and aristocratic marriages were often contracted on behalf of young children for reasons of diplomacy or for other material advantages. Canon law, however, decreed that such marriages should not be consummated until both parties were of age, at least twelve for a girl and fourteen for a boy.

Very thankfully most people have moved on since 1389. There are still some backward religions that have not.

I doubt a child would be allowed to rule a country now, as they were then

They were allowed to rule in name only; there was invariably a Regent who actually took charge.

Out of curiosity, what do people find offensive about a child being "married" in an entirely sexless setting?

The age of marriage without sex shouldn't bother anyone if you ask me, but that 'coming of age' at 12 may well do :o

It still is 12 in some countries; it effectively was here until round about the turn of the 20th century. Indeed, one might well argue that it's the modern trend of insisting they wait until full adulthood which is unusual and possibly out of step.
