ferno
So long as a prominent politician follows his or her party whip, does it really matter if they privately express an opinion contrary to the official line? In the case of Chris Grayling, Tory home affairs spokesman, who confessed that he thinks B&B owners should be able to discriminate against gay guests, then yes it does. Not only was Grayling – or “Gayling”, as a Sky News reporter inadvertently called him – advocating that business owners break anti-discriminatory laws, he demonstrated that what Tories will say and do to win an election has little bearing on what they believe to be right and wrong. This is not surprising, given that 74 per cent of Tory MPs voted against Harriet Harman’s Equality Act, which made it illegal to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the provision of goods and services. In fact, just 2 per cent more Tories voted for this groundbreaking piece of legislation than voted to repeal the hated and totemic Section 28. http://www.tribunemagazine.co.uk/2010/04/tory-homophobia-cannot-be-put-to-bed/

It seems to be a marriage of convenience rather than a love match. Labour only took him back because he was the only candidate they could think of who had a prayer of winning. I don't think the Labour leadership's like or dislike of Ken Livingstone is anything to do with his voting record on gay rights though.
mj.scuba
I don't think the Labour leadership's like or dislike of Ken Livingstone is anything to do with his voting record on gay rights though. Ken's comments in the New Statesman about Tories being hypocrits had nothing to do with voting record either.
mj.scuba
http://www.newstatesman.com/200501240019 Peter Tatchell, a former Ken Livingstone ally, finds himself accused of Islamophobia as the mayor [Ken Livingstone] continues to defend a Muslim cleric who favours killing gays Ken Livingstone defends people who want to kill gays. And he was on the payroll of the Iranian government which publicly executes gays whilst working for Press TV.
Rich
So are we tory bashing on this thread for being too gay or not gay enough? IMO it doesn't matter whether someone is gay, straight or a Martian, it's what they're like as a person that should count.
Rupert_Baehr
Well, if Ken Livingstone is elected as Mayor of London, I certainly won't live in London. If Boris Johnson is elected as Mayor of London, I certainly won't live in London, either. Perhaps Livingstone will be elected as Mayor of Sheffield when all the Londoners move North? alchresearch
The tories being right-on: The other fella started it with the "Prince Charming" reference. And since when has "pantomime dame" been a gay slur? Mince charming would have been far funnier.
