Head of failing public service paid £9.5 million per year

So.

What is the actual problem on the table?

Do we have any information other than what the newspapers have told us?

Anyone here actually looked at any real numbers?

A4e has been around since 1986, and many training schemes like this have been around simply to fudge the unemployment stats - that has always been the primary concern and why these kinds of companies have been allowed to operate by successive governments.

If they were to offer real training (ie, trades, basic skills etc...) then it could be argued that they are a job creation scheme. For example, they offer training in becoming a plumber, someone becomes a plumber and sets up a business, the business grows and that plumber who was initially trained then needs to employ a secretary to answer the phone, he then needs to employ a van driver to fetch and carry equipment, thats job creation.

If basic skills like maths and IT were to be taught, then these people could then apply for jobs in the jobs market (perhaps even a role in an accounts department - perhaps for the plumber who initially was trained) then thats another person off the unemployment lists.

When you think about the money that has been spent since the mid 1980s filddling the stats, its really quite scandalous. Some people have become very rich, some businesses have had free labour - thats not really what training the unemployed should be about and thats why its wrong.

A4E do provide that sort of training for trades and basic skills, but no matter how many people they put through courses, they are not in the business of job creation, that is down to the economy as a whole.

A4e has never done any kind of trades training, such as for those unemployed who want to become a plumber, plasterer or electrician. A4e isn't stupid, that kind of training costs a lot of money. It is much easier and cost efficient for A4e to give training on interview techniques, how to write a spec letter, CV writing etc.

Yes, job creation is not what they get their money for. Getting people into employment is, and they are manifestly failing at that. Of course it's difficult at the best of times, and some of their clients* are unemployable, something they should have allowed for when lying to get the contract.

*Of course the inevitable outcome of this is that their pals at the JC will be under orders to only send 'work ready' clients down to A4e to make their targets more achievable. So if you have to sign on, are presentable, literate and otherwise educated, look out. However if you look, talk and are scum, they'll leave you alone.

No change there, then.

Matching the unemployed to current job vacancies is what Emma Harrison gets richly rewarded for. Something her company has a distinctly poor track record in.

But Emma never lets failure get in the way of a multi-million pound bonus from the tax payer.

The bonus was from her company.

While her company may be entirely funded by the taxpayer, I do not think that is the same as being a bonus from the taxpayer.

But I am not convinced that it is they that you should be shouting at. Surely it is those that gave her the contracts?
